I had a long conversation with my sister Kate this past Sunday. She was horrified to hear that many of our employees do not have health insurance. But at $10 per hour, the nursing assistants are hard pressed to afford $80 or more per month to cover themselves. For two or three children, they could pay almost $400 per month. That would be 25% of their gross pay. We need a nationalized health care system. When the very people who provide personal care to the ill, the fragile and the elderly cannot receive health care themselves, there is something wrong with the current health care system. JMHO.
There is nothing more satisfying than a glass of wine with dinner after a busy workday. As usual, I turned on the ABC nightly news at 6:30, put my Amy's vegetarian spaghetti with non-meat balls in the microwave, and poured a glass of my favorite designer red.
And what to my wondering ears should appear but a study showing that 3-5 glasses of wine per week can increase a woman's risk of breast cancer by 17%. 2 glasses per day increase the risk by 51%. I am fucked.
Over the past 2 years I have changed my eating habits, lost 23 pounds, and decreased my clothing size from a 16 creeping up to 18, back to a respectable size 12. I have increased my physical activity and spit shined my wardrobe. This is what I think: these people are all full of shit.
That is my professional opinion as a registered nurse. I can't take it any more. Kudos to all of those people who are modifying to a more healthful lifestyle. But somewhere in there we have to have fun doing it. I have a sign in my office that says "I would give up chocolate but I'm no quitter."
In the end, I think I will go with Elena's favorite quote: Life is like a cigarette. Smoke it to the butt.
I had a most unnerving day. For some reason, I got dressed in the dark. I have 2 pair of black shoes that are nearly identical. Except that one pair has heels about 2 inches higher than the first pair.
So I got to work and when I tried to remove whatever was sticking to my shoe that was making me walk funny, I saw what I had done.
When I said I was going home after the morning stand up to change shoes and investigate the wierd guy sitting in a truck staring at me as I left my house, I was commanded to go to breakfast with the boss et al...
Where LavenderDE decided it was a good idea to balance her pot of hot tea on top of her cup. Of course, as soon as she said "Don't worry, it's fine," the whole mess splashed all over the table and my nurse consultant. Luckily, no one was permanently damaged.
Then we get the call that one of our dementia folks had escaped and crossed the street unescorted. Which meant there was no hope of leaving the place to change my shoes. I loped around with an oddly unbalanced walk the rest of the damn day.
The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County, Michigan, a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the upcoming election as part of the state GOP’s effort to challenge some voters on Election Day.
"We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses," party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week. He said the local party wanted to make sure that proper electoral procedures were followed.
You have got to be kidding. For shame, for shame, for shame GOP!
Suddenly, I am embarrassed to have once called Michigan my home. I will guarantee you that this is more than dirty politics. It's downright racist. Most likely, the people who have lost their homes are ethnic minorities and/or working class people. People who are likely to vote for Obama.
This blog was bothering me. Somewhere aroung 2 a.m. I had an amazing thought:
Clean up that mess! Move something to another page. Duh!
I am paying for the service. Why not use what I'm paying for? I can be very slow on the uptake sometimes.
Anyway, I need something to keep me off the streets and out of trouble today. And now that I just got the message that the staff let three residents out of 25 in one cottage fall this morning, my blood pressure is through the roof.
