Prop 8: The Battle for Gay Marriage

Lots of blogs and websites are fighting for and against proposition 8.  The most surprising is this one.

Keep the faith

This is not the only place on the net where I have found people saying that Proposition 8 is a part of a Mormon plot to overthrow the Christian faith.  This person says that "we can address the issue of same sex marriage later on our own terms."

Not sure why but that scares me a little.  I don't know if I ought to say "I'll take it if it's a vote for me," or "Thanks but no thanks."  I don't really want to be associated with some anti-Mormon sentiment.

I'm also unsure of what this guy means by addressing gay marriage "on our own terms."  I'm guessing it might be a fight for another day.

What is important for me right now is to keep my eye on the prize.

Two folks that I am aware of who are working to raise money for the No on Prop 8 movement are Hahn at Home and Lesbian Dad.

Lesbian Dad started out trying to raise $5,000 and is now close to raising double that amount.  Click on this link to contribute.  (The icon is not a link).  ActBluethermometer

Lori from Hahn at Home is part of a group called 8 Against 8.

Eight against 8

Eight lesbian bloggers of some note have banded together to raise money also.  Please remember that about 10% of the US population lives in California.  A loss for us here means a giant step backward for all of us.

We have only have ten days left until election day.

I hear ya on the "a vote is a vote" vs. "but it's a creepy vote" problem. I was canvassing recently for Obama, and a woman told me that she believes he is the antichrist, and therefore she's voting for him to hasten the return of Jesus. Um... thanks?

Hope 8 swings the right way... here in Florida, we've got the same thing ('cept it's 2 for us)... I think we'll defeat it, because a lot of elder-rights advocates have come out against it, saying that restricting all privileges to people who are married (and defining marriage, of course, hetero-ly), it would hurt all the old people who shack up but don't get married. (Which is actually a pretty sizable demographic; I guess they don't want to piss off their kids by remarrying after becoming a widow/er, but don't want to be alone, either.)

I strongly suspect we're going to see a phenomenon opposite of that in 2000/2004 - that is, instead of the president riding in on the coattails of these anti-gay-marriage props, the turnout of people voting for Obama will help defeat the props.

I hope.

I realized last night, Becky, that your observations on the Obama voters defeating the props might well be our best hope.

It's scary how many nutcases are out there.

Thanks so much for posting this and for your support. Lesbian Dad rocks, as do the other 7 of the 8. And, so do each and every one of you all who used valuable blog space to assist us.

We nearly hit the $14k mark in a week. Quite astounding and a testament to a lot of folks who gave what they could - it all added up!
